Tax Department to roll out text message service

The Tax Department will on Friday roll out a new system in which mobile phone text messages will be sent to persons reminding them to pay their taxes.

The Tax Reminder System (TAXREM) is now fully in place following a two month pilot phase.

Taxpayers who sign up for the service will get reminders for specific transactions.

Director of Public Relations at the Tax Administration Services Department, Meris Haughton, says the system was developed to improve customer service and encourage taxpayers to remain compliant.

"So were are inviting persons to sign up through our customer care centre or online at www.jamaicatax.gov.jm ,"

"Once they have signed up they will be able to get text message reminders on their cellular phones relating to motor vehicle registration certificate, motor vehicle fitness certificate expiry dates. We will also be sending out reminders about General Consumption Tax and Special Consumption Tax failure for payments or filing of returns," Ms. Haughton said.

In the next six months the reminder service will be expanded to include text messages for Motor Vehicle Titles; Tax Compliance Certificates; Driver's Licence as well as PAYE and Income Tax.
