TIP Friendly Society workers locked out of company’s AGM

Several employees of TIP Friendly Society on Half Way Tree Road in St. Andrew are hopping mad over a board decision to bar them from the company's Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The meeting, which got underway at 9:00 Friday morning, is being held at the Jamaica Conference Centre in downtown Kingston.

A TIP Society source, who requested not to be identified, says several employees were barred from the meeting, despite being registered members of the organisation.

"We’ve always been coming to the meetings, we’ve always been working here, attending all the AGM meetings and we were only informed last year that we cannot attend the meeting unless we are working and they’ve only selected two permanent members of staff to work. They have taken on temporary persons or persons who are not affiliated with the company to come in to work," the source told RJR News.

The source added that it is still unclear why the employees and members were barred from the AGM, as efforts to obtain an explanation from the management, including Ray Howell, the Chairman of the Board, proved futile.

When contacted, Brian Sang, the General Manager of TIP Friendly Society, declined to speak, noting that he was in the middle of the AGM.

TIP Friendly Society offers term insurance and a wide range of benefits to teachers and other members of the education sector.
