The World Travel and
Tourism Council (WTTC) has forecast that Trinidad
and Tobago will lead tourism growth in the Caribbean this year.
It is predicted that overall tourism in the region will increase by 2.3 per cent, with the sector in Trinidad and Tobago registering an 8.4 per cent growth rate followed by St. Kitts and Nevis at 5.6 per cent and St. Lucia at 5.1 per cent.
The Council also projected that the region's travel and tourism sector will generate approximately US$57 billion in revenue this year and account for 12.9 per cent of the region's employment.
This translates into approximately two million jobs.
Puerto Rico was identified as the revenue leader in the Caribbean, with travel and tourism accounting for $10.8 billion.
However, the WTTC noted that the overall growth will level out to an average of 3.2 per cent each year between 2009 and 2018, falling below the world average.
