17 killed in four days, as police promise greater security

The police are reporting a high number of murders over the Christmas weekend in Jamaica, with 17 killed during the period, December 23 to early on the 26th.

Among them were four shot at a shop in Hendon, Norwood in the western parish of St. James on Christmas night. A fifth person was shot and injured in that incident.

The latest statistics come at the tail-end of a dismal year for the country, with the murder count easily outstipping the 2015 figure.

Data obtained from the police revealed that just over 1300 hundred murders have been committed since January, significantly ahead the 1192 people killed in all of 2015.

In the face of such daunting statistics, the Police High Command is again promising to put in place additional anti-crime measures across the country.
