2 killed, 1 injured in Mountain View violence

The East Kingston Police say they are keeping a close watch on sections of Mountain View Avenue following Sunday's flare-up of violence, which left two men dead and one hospitalised under police guard.

The police say a feud between rival gangs in the Goodwich and Jacques Road communities sparked the violence.

The victims are Ijah Young of Jacques Road and Ramone Hopkins of Henderson Avenue off Waltham Park Road while a 21-year old man from Wavel Avenue, also off Waltham Park Road was injured.

Residents reported hearing explosions along Bygrave Avenue shortly after 11am and called the police.

Investigators who went to the scene found Mr. Young's body with gunshot wounds lying on the road.

The cops say their investigations then led them to nearby Chavez Avenue where Mr. Hopkins and another suspect were seen on a motorbike.

The cops say the men shot at them.

The fire was returned and both men were hit.

A .45 semi-automatic pistol was also allegedly seized.

The injured men were taken to hospital where Mr. Hopkins was pronounced dead and the other admitted under police guard.

Residents of the community however blocked the main road to protest against the police shooting.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police in charge of administration in the East Kingston Police Division, Winston Lawrence, an internal struggle over leadership of the Jacques Road and Goodwich communities triggered the violence.

He said the police will be maintaining a strong presence in the area.
