Following years of  being on the auction block, the 303-room property which formerly housed the Wyndham Kingston Hotel has been sold. It was sold on Tuesday at an auction in Kingston. A Jamaican company is to become the new owner, but the name of the company has not yet been disclosed to the public.

Auctioneer and Partner at chartered surveyors, Allison Pitter and Company, Connell Steer, told RJR News that two bids were received during the auction. He declined to disclose the selling price.

Lawyers for the receiver and the purchaser will now meet "and they will iron out whatever kinks there are, and hopefully, within 60 days the property will be transferred," he explained.

The Wyndham Group removed its name from the hotel, following a pull-out in July last year. This occurred four months after the hotel was closed following a massive fire.

Union

And with the hotel now sold, the union representing scores of  former Wyndham workers will approach the receiver regarding another pay out. The workers last month received some of their entitlements as well as other benefits.

Rudolph Thomas, Senior Negotiating Officer with the Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) outlined to RJR News the next moves the union was anticipating, including being notified about the payments that will be be made by the company and how the surplus will be treated.

"We are hoping that what is left, as a surplus, would be sufficient for these workers to received exactly what they are entitled to," Thomas said.
