The Kingston Central Police are reporting that 32 criminal gangs have been identified in the division.

Fifteen of the gangs are said to be active.

Several persons have been killed in recent weeks in the ongoing gang violence in sections of the division.

Superintendent Maldria Jones Williams, head of the Kingston Central police, said Rose Gardens, Allman Town, Fletcher's Land, South Side and Tel Aviv are some of the communities where the gangs are located.

Superintendent Williams said some of the gangs are also linked to criminal networks in other divisions in Kingston, St. Catherine, and even in St. James, where they "solicit the help of these affiliates...to carry out their gang activity."

However, she declared that the police are "out there in the space, trying as best as possible to prevent and to ensure that the law abiding citizens are kept safe and secure."

Superintendent Williams said there have been 31 murders committed in the Kingston Central police division since the start of the year, of which 21 or 68 per cent have been cleared-up.

She noted that this is adding to the "trust building initiative" because "when the residents see that we are actually clearing the murders, they are more willing than ever to assist us with information."
