42 Jamaican farm workers leave for Canada

By Halshane Burke

Forty-two farm workers left Jamaica Thursday for Canada, to take up employment opportunities in Ontario and Nova Scotia.

The employment programme has been under scrutiny following reports from some Jamaicans of inhumane treatment by their employers on farms in Canada.

A fact-finding mission, headed by trade unionist Helene Davis Whyte, while admitting that there needs to be changes, reported that it did not find evidence of the purported claims made about inhumane treatment.

Labour Minister Pearnel Charles Jr. has pledged to strengthen the oversight of the programme.

Speaking with the 42 farm workers during a send off ceremony, the Labour Minister reminded them that they are ambassadors of the country.

He also said the ministry has provided the workers with a document informing them of their rights.
