Dr. Denise Eldemire Shearer, Executive Director of Mona Ageing & Wellness Centre, is calling for amendments to the current flexi-work legislation.
She argues that the changes are needed to help persons in the labour force better balance work and care for their loved ones.
The call comes against the background of people exiting the labour force, citing a lack of workplace flexibility and limited availability of part time jobs.
The issue was highlighted last year in a report by the Caribbean Policy Research Institute titled "Outside In: Increasing Participation in the Labour Force," which revealed that some 15 thousand people are unemployed due to care responsibilities, but they want to work.
In a special report titled 'Unsung Heroes-Who Cares for the Caregiver' aired Tuesday on Beyond the Headlines, Dr. Denise Eldemire Shearer said provisions are needed for informal care providers.
Two days before the September 3 general election, during a Jamaica Labour Party press conference, Senator Kamina Johnson-Smith who was speaking in the capacity of campaign spokesperson, promised a overhaul of the flexi-work system.
