Minister of Agriculture Floyd Green says he will continue to lobby the Minister of Finance to have the General Consumption Tax (GCT) on eggs removed.
Mr. Green told egg farmers at their annual general meeting on Wednesday the tax should not have been applied.
He said the tax has been driving up the cost of eggs.
“If we’re saying it’s such a good protein. If we’re saying we’re now looking how we can feed ourselves then we have to reduce that cost so that working people can be able to afford [it],” the minister argued.
Mr. Green said he had spoken to Finance Minister Dr. Nigel Clarke about the tax, while acknowledging it is a difficult time to request the removal of the tax due to declining revenues amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
President of the Egg Farmers Association, Roy Baker was optimistic the Finance Minister would remove the GCT.
Mr. Baker said despite challenges last year, the industry experienced record sales.
“With the absence of almost 40 per cent of the tourist industry market we were able to sell a record production in 2020 that we have never sold before…We made 208 million eggs during the production year of 2020 and they all sold it,” he said.
