Ascot Comprehensive to launch SET programme

One school's effort to help troubled students has led to the introduction of a new project through the Students Expressing Truth (SET) programme.

The Ascot Comprehensive High School in Greater Portmore, St. Catherine, like many other educational institutions has been plagued by violence, particularly with students fighting with their peers and with teachers.

Another challenge for administrators is students smoking on the premises and being involved in gangs.

In a bid to correct their behaviour, school administrators implemented a boot camp which did not yield the desired results.

Principal Cedric Murray says SET was brought in as a last resort.

"We have become convinced that the old way has not worked, is not working so we're searching to find new ways to get reach students, who are our greatest resource, so we can get the best from them so then can give back in turn, the best to us," he said.

The SET programme, sponsored by USAID started 10 years ago in the island's penal institutions providing skills training for inmates.

Taking the same approach, students will be taught various subject areas and learn marketable skills in audio and video production among other things.

Teachers will also receive training.

The Ministry of Education will be looking to extend this programme to other schools.
