An attempt will be made on Monday to clear the pile-up of cargo at Jamaica’s ports following Friday's collapse of Jamaica Customs Agency's ASYCUDA system.
The Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association of Jamaica said the cargo clearance system was restored on Saturday, and Jamaica Customs extended opening hours to facilitate processing of shipments.
But with the ASYCUDA system having had frequent disruptions over the last three months, Mitzie Gordon Burke-Green, President of the Customs Brokers and Freight Forwarders Association of Jamaica, wants a back-up plan in the event there are more glitches.
That option, she suggested, should be a “stand-alone” system which is “off-line,” in order to avoid the extensive down time that is experienced whenever ASYCUDA malfunctions.
