Attorney Isat Buchanan pleads guilty to professional misconduct

By Kimone Witter

Attorney Isat Buchanan has pleaded guilty to professional misconduct for offensive comments he directed at Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn in July, while co-hosting an online show.

Mr. Buchanan says he pleaded guilty before a disciplinary panel of the General Legal Council on Saturday to breaching ethics rules that guide the conduct of attorneys authorised to practice in Jamaica.

With his agreement, a sanction hearing to determine his punishment was also conducted on Saturday and was adjourned to allow the three-member panel time to consider its decision.

Speaking with the Gleaner, the attorney said his punishment is entirely in the hands of the GLC.

Mr. Buchanan says it is a teachable moment for him.

His distasteful comments toward Ms. Llewellyn were linked to the latest controversy involving her office and the then proposed extension of the retirement age of the office holder.
