Well-known attorney at law Oswald James, who was placed on trial on fraud charges, has been found guilty.
The verdict was handed down Monday afternoon by Senior magistrate, Shelly Williams, in the Corporate Area Criminal Court.
Mr James is to be sentenced on April 19. Mr James, of the firm James and Company, was charged on August 14, 2009 by Fraud Squad detectives, following allegations that he had defrauded one of his clients of more than 20 million dollars in a real estate deal. The complainant, Canadian businessman, Carlton Lewis, made a report to the Fraud Squad in June 2009, after the attorney failed to refund the 230-thousand US dollars he allegedly gave him.
Mr. James had strongly denied the allegations. He testified that he invested the money, as directed, by Mr Lewis, and that no fraud was involved. However, after nearly two years of testimony, the senior magistrate returned a guilty verdict. Mr James' attorney, Brian Barnes, told RJR News that they will be appealing the verdict.
