25 new rural school buses arrive

The Ministry of Transport has announced that  25 of 110 new rural school buses have arrived at Kingston Wharves.

The ministry says the buses, which arrived on Tuesday, form part of efforts to modernize and expand public transportation services for students in rural communities.

Transport Minister  Daryl Vaz was joined by Minister of Education Dr. Dana Morris Dixon and Minister of Finance Fayval Williams for the offloading and preliminary inspection of the buses.

These buses are designated to serve 258 rural schools across the island.

Mr Vaz says another 36 buses are scheduled to depart New York on Thursday and arrive in Jamaica next week.

On Friday an additional 25 buses will leave from Miami, and on Friday, July 4, the final 23 will be dispatched to Jamaica.

Mr Vaz says this will complete the fleet of 110 buses; 100 for active service and 10 reserved for contingencies.

He says the service will be subsidized, with students paying a flat fee of 50 dollars.

The fleet includes buses in three sizes - 32, 54, and 72 seaters - to efficiently serve 100 routes mapped across 258 rural schools.
