Austin “Jack” Warner, Trinidad and Tobago’s former Minister of National Security will return to Parliament following a resounding victory in Monday’s by-election in the constituency of Chaguanas West which he had previously represented following the 2010 general election.
Warner, the interim leader of the newly formed Independent Liberal Party (ILP) defeated four other candidates including Khadijah Ameen, the candidate of the ruling coalition People’s Partnership government in Trinidad and Tobago.
The preliminary results released late Monday showed Warner received 69 per cent of the votes cast.
Warner, the former Member of Parliament for Chaguanas West under the United National Congress (UNC) banner, formed his own party, the Independent Liberal Party (ILP) after his bid to seek re-election as a UNC candidate was rejected.
