Barbados Defence Force deploying field hospital to Westmoreland

The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) will be deploying its field medical hospital to western Jamaica.

The BDF says it will be sending dozens of Barbadian and regional medical volunteers to assist with relief and recovery efforts following Hurricane Melissa.

The operation, dubbed Operation Helping Hands, will provide emergency medical care to residents of Savanna-la-Mar in Westmoreland, as the public hospital has been badly damaged and staff have been overwhelmed.

BDF Chief of Staff Brigadier Carlos Lovell says the deployment, which comes at the official request of the Jamaican government, represents both a historic and symbolic act of Caribbean unity.

The Type 2 field hospital will offer surgical and primary care services, water purification and pharmaceutical support,
effectively operating as a full service hospital.

The first rotation of about 70 personnel, including the military and civilian medical professionals from across the Eastern Caribbean, will be deployed from November 18 to December 18.
