Birth certificate verification cuts down GSAT candidates

The number of students registered to sit this year's Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT) could end up being smaller following the Ministry of Education's verification exercise.

Forty-eight thousand two hundred students are slated to sit the exam next month, 1,500 fewer than the 49,700 registered last year.

However, Acting Chief Education Officer, Dr. Sephlin Myers-Thomas says after the verification, the number should decrease rather than increase.

Dr. Myers-Thomas says persons have written to the Ministry requesting the withdrawal of some students whose birth certificates revealed that they are over the age limit to sit the exam.

She says every effort is being made to have the exam administered as scheduled.

The test which will take place March 25 and 26 will see students writing five papers including Mathematics, Science and Communication Task.

Last month the Education Ministry was chided for causing confusion after the proposed dates for the exam were suddenly changed from March 18 and 19.

The Ministry later explained that unforeseen scheduling conflicts forced it to revert to March 25 and 26.

The date for the release of the GSAT results remains June 18.
