Former head of  advertising firm Marketing Counsellors, Adrian Robinson, has died.

Mr Robinson, who had been ailing for some time, died in hospital on Monday. He was 87 years old.

Two years ago he gave up the day to day running of  Marketing Counselors which he founded in 1987 to his son Marlon Robinson.

Adrian Robinson was also a key figure in tourism promotion and served as Director of Toursim on two occasions.

He was also one of Jamaica's best known broadcasters in the early years of the industry, working as an announcer at both Radio Jamaica and the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation.

His voice will long be associated with the country's Independence ceremony on the night of August 5, 1962, when at the stroke of midnight, he described the lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of the black, green and gold flag of the new nation as it symbolically marked the transition into Independence Day, August 6:

"The lights are now out in the National Stadium. When they go on again the flag of Jamaica will fly on the flagstaff where just this moment the flag of Britain held sway. It is perhaps a symbolic thing that out of darkness we move to the light of Independence. From darkness to light, this is the moment of a nation's creation. And now the black, green and gold flag of Jamaica flies proudly from the flagstaff. The stadium really is jammed tonight, everyone anxious; and now that the moment has come, there seems to be an almost perceptible lull as people begin to wonder what next, and I suppose begin to look forward to the dawn tomorrow when everything will be different perhaps for many people."

In later years Mr. Robinson's distinctive voice was heard in many commercials aired on radio and television.
