Buchanan apologises for comments about DPP

By Kimone Witter

Attorney-at-law Isat Buchanan has apologised for his unsavoury comment in reference to Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn on a YouTube programme he was co-hosting.

Mr. Buchanan says he has considered the statement, and though he is a believer in free speech, he now recognises the importance of preserving public civility and mutual respect in how people engage in the society.

He says his comments and use of the Vybz Kartel song were unfortunate, and for that he unequivocally apologises.

Mr. Buchanan also expressed regret and sorrow to Ms. Llewellyn.

The attorney, who chaired the People's National Party's Human Rights Commission, resigned on Monday following backlash over his comments.

The Jamaica Labour Party Women's Caucus, led by Olivia Grange, had earlier called for PNP President Mark Golding to act immediately in removing Mr. Buchanan from the role over what it called his "vile" comments directed toward the DPP.

Ms. Grange said Mr. Buchanan, under the guise of quoting his client, Vybz Kartel, used misogynistic, crude, nasty, sexist, low and disgraceful language in reference to Ms. Llewellyn.

The People's National Party Women's Movement also strongly condemned the "unacceptable" public remarks made by Mr. Buchanan, saying such behaviour against a female leader in the country goes against the principles and values that the party upholds.
