Business leaders are expressing strong disapproval with the comments by the People's National Party's Dennis Meadows and the Jamaica Labour Party's Everald Warmington.
In a video that has now gone viral on social media, Mr. Meadows, the Trelawny Northern MP hopeful, can be heard seemingly condoning lottery scam related activities.
With regards to Mr. Warmington, the South Western St. Catherine Member of Parliament and Minister of Works, who was addressing supporters following the local government election, expressed disappointment with the results in that parish, but told the crowd: "I'm the Minister of Works and the Member of Parliament. No PNP councillor is going to spend my money."
The Jamaica Chamber of Commerce said the remarks of Mr. Warmington, if true, are particularly concerning in light of recent statements from Prime Minister Andrew Holness where he praised the contenders from each political party for waging competitive campaigns.
Mr. Holness was speaking Monday night at the JLP headquarters following the release of preliminary results in the local government election.
In relation to Mr. Meadows, the JCC said it took note that he had apologised for his comments and that they had been condemned by the PNP.
The JCC said, especially as the general election approaches, it is calling for the leadership of both political parties to remind their representatives that words have consequences.
Going further, the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica has called for prompt action from the Office of the Political Ombudsman.
It said the office must act decisively to maintain the integrity and respectability of political leadership in Jamaica.
