Tapper upstages Nugent, Levell attains World Champs qualifying time as curtain comes down on Nat'l Champs

Bryan Levell became back to back national 200m champion on his way to attaining the qualifying mark for this year’s World Championships in Tokyo, Japan on Sunday’s final day of the JAAA Senior and Junior Championships at the National Stadium.

Levell was the only one in the race to dip below the World Championship qualifying standard of 20.16 seconds, recording 20.10 seconds to finish ahead of Christopher Taylor 20.28 and Adrian Kerr 20.49 seconds. In the women’s equivalent, Ashantie Moore clocked 22.66 seconds to win her first national title.

Meanwhile, Megan Tapper produced the best time of her career to upset national record holder Ackera Nugent in the women's 100m hurdles final.

Tapper sped to 12.34 seconds to finish ahead of Nugent in 12.41 seconds and Amoi Brown 12.67 seconds in third.

The men’s event which saw Olympic bronze medallist Rasheed Broadbell withdrawing just before the final because of an injury sustained in warm-up, resulted in Orlando Bennett being crowned a first time national champion.

Bennett clocked 13.10 seconds, one-hundredth of a second outside his personal best to beat Demario Prince 13:12 (PB) and Tyler Mason 13.22 seconds.

The 400 metres saw national record holder Rusheen McDonald (44.89 seconds) and Nikisha pryce (49.97 seconds) prevailing.

Elsewhere, Daniel Clarke of Kingston College clocked a superb 12.96 seconds to break the National Junior Record in the Under-20 boys sprint hurdles.
