Cabinet has approved a map for the proposed parish of Portmore.

Information Minister Robert Morgan made the disclosure during Wednesday's post-Cabinet media briefing at Jamaica House.

Mr. Morgan said the map was prepared by the National Land Agency, with input from the Portmore Municipal Corporation as well as "other stakeholders within and outside of the government".

"The next step is to table to amend the bill in Parliament so that Portmore can finally become a parish, which is a commitment that this government has consistently made," he advised.

In January, Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the legislation to make Portmore a parish has been drafted but the government would not seek to have it approved by Parliament before the local government election that was held on February 26.

Member of Parliament for St. Catherine Southern, Fitz Jackson, has argued that altering electoral boundaries without the input of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica would contradict constitutional norms.

Mr. Jackson, who is also shadow minister without portfolio with special responsibility for affairs concerning Portmore, has threatened legal action if the government goes ahead with using its parliamentary majority to push the bill through the House of Representatives.
