Cabinet begins review of CRC report

Cabinet has received the report of the Constitutional Reform Committee and has started a thorough review of the process, ensuring that all aspects of the report are carefully considered.

That was confirmed in a media release from the Office of the Prime Minister on Monday.

The report is to be tabled in Parliament, along with the Government's conclusions, once Cabinet completes its review.

The Government says it remains hopeful that the Opposition will sign the document, as a collaborative approach is essential for achieving meaningful and lasting constitutional reform.

The Government says it will not engage in the politicization of the constitutional reform process nor contribute to undermining its integrity.

Mark Golding, President of the People's National Party, has publicly declared that the Opposition's representatives on the CRC will not sign the report, given that, in the view of the Opposition, it does not satisfy its aspirations for comprehensive constitutional reform.

The Opposition's primary source of dissatisfaction with the constitutional reform process is that it does not envisage Jamaica opting out of the UK based Privy Council as its final appellate court, along with the establishment of a republic, in what the Government says is only phase one of the process.

Mr Golding will elaborate on his party's concerns later today (Tuesday) at a press conference.
