The Broadcasting Commission is opening up the market for
companies that want to provide islandwide Subscriber Television (STV) service
using wireless technology.
As such, the Commission is issuing a "Call for Applicants" to interested companies.
Approval for the new call for STV license applications was granted by Information Minister Olivia ‘Babsy' Grange following recommendations from the Commission.
There was also consultation with the Technology Ministry and the Spectrum Management Authority.
Successful applicants are expected to move quickly to enhance islandwide competition in the cable sector, thereby providing more choice for STV customers across the country.
Applicants must demonstrate that they have the financial, technical and managerial capacity to operate the service.
They should also be able to begin service within six months.
Earlier this week, Ms. Grange announced that cable company Telstar had received approval to operate in eleven additional Corporate Area zones.
The Broadcasting Commission also approved applications from two rural cable companies to sell their businesses.
They are Wilson's Electronics in Mandeville, Manchester and the North Eastern Satellite Services in St. Mary.
They will sell their operations to FLOW.
