Cancer, hypertension, diabetes, heart disease still leading causes of death in Jamaica

New data show illnesses from cancers, hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases remain the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in Jamaica.
 
According to the just released Economic and Social Survey Jamaica 2019, deaths were at 6.9 per 1,000 people.
 
In 2017, total deaths among Jamaicans five years and over was 18,859 compared with 19,661 reported in 2016.
 
Leading causes of deaths were diabetes, cerebrovascular diseases, deaths by external causes, hypertensive diseases, heart disease, prostate cancer, and HIV diseases.
 
Breast cancer was the leading cause of death among women and prostate cancer for men.
