The Chief Public Health Inspector for Kingston and St. Andrew is to serve statutory notice on the National Water Commission and the leadership of the Area 4 police headquarters due to an overflow of raw sewage at Harman Barracks.

Grayson Hutchinson says the blockage of a manhole has caused sewage to flow into a nearby drain.

Mr. Hutchinson says the police officers, nearby schools and food establishments are at risk of an outbreak if the matter is not addressed.

"It is a situation that has occurred from time to time and it should have been corrected a long time ago because it is a threat to the health and well-being of all persons concerned. So it is our intention to serve a statutory notice on the ACP or SSP in charge of this facility and the acting president of the National Water Commission for them to ensure that resources are provided, are procured to bring a resolution to this problem," he told our newscentre.

Meanwhile, Mayor of Kingston and Chairman of the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC) Andrew Swaby has called for Minister with responsibility for Water Matthew Samuda to outline the master plan for the sewerage system in the Corporate Area.

Mayor Swaby said he has written to Minister Samuda inviting him to address the issue during the monthly meeting of the KSAMC.

The Kingston mayor said the overflow of sewage is not coffined to Harman Barracks and has become a major health issue across several areas.

"This is something that has plagued the entire Kingston and St. Andrew, and we want to see how best we can resolve it. We want to know what time frame the government will be addressing these issues. And I believe that the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation is the right forum for him to come and have a disccusion," said the mayor.
