Chigwell residents to be relocated

Water and Housing Minister Dr. Horace Chang says the Government will be leaving nothing to chance and will be relocating residents of Chigwell in Hanover.

Rising water in the community has already submerged 17 houses.

Dr. Chang, who toured the flooded areas of Hanover over the weekend along with personnel from the Water Resources Authority, says relocation is imperative.

According to Dr Chang, the situation is being assessed by the Water Resources Authority and land has been identified in a nearby community to which the residents can to relocate.

"A number of them have leased lands out there so we will have to work with them to see what can be done to prevent this thing from reoccurring. There are a number of people who are beyond the flooded areas and are accessible. They are not of particular concern but we still have to know we can mitigate the problem in the community," he said.

Relocation required

There was a mass relocation of Chigwell residents 30 years ago, due to rising waters in the community.

Dr Chang said at that time, many residents refused to leave their homes while others voluntarily relocated.

According to the Water and Housing Minister, the mitigation exercise this time around is imperative and will be undertaken soon in light of changing weather patterns

"Clearly it's a recurring problem and in the context of climate change which will result in greater frequency of extreme weather from long periods of drought followed by periods of heavy rainfall, the chances of the frequency of this kind of flooding will increase," he said.
