Child and Adolescent Wellness Centre opened in Montego Bay

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang

A Child and Adolescent Wellness Centre, recently established in Montego Bay, was officially opened on Thursday.

The principal aim of the state-run facility is to provide mental health support services to young people in Western Jamaica, from early intervention and counseling to therapeutic and rehabilitative care.

The Ministry of Health & Wellness says the facility is designed to promote mental resilience and equip young people with the tools needed to thrive in today's complex world.

The centre will also serve as a hub for mental health education and community outreach.

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang says the centre is a critical addition to the institutions in Montego Bay that focus on crime prevention, "because we need to catch the youngsters and the children who are being exposed to violence and other social dysfunctions before they actually become active in the criminal networks."

The centre was established by the Ministry of Health & Wellness in collaboration with three other ministries - Education, National Security, and Foreign Affairs.

It is funded by the European Union and private sector interests.
