Community partnership critical to ensuring cybersecurity - Chang

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang

National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang has underscored the government's commitment to cybersecurity.

As Jamaica becomes more digitally connected with the government rolling out e-services, the government is reassuring the public that trust, awareness and partnership are critical.

Dr. Chang said the government has made adjustments to legislation, investments in technology, training and infrastructure, and is monitoring the country's cyberspace to safeguard the nation's citizens and the digital economy.

"We are beginning the process of drafting a new Cybersecurity Act, in fact. This will establish clear parameters for the prevention, retention and response to cyber threats. We have passed the Data Protection Act and we are now in the business of looking at these parts of the national cyber strategy," he noted.

Dr. Chang said while Jamaica has many international partners, perhaps the most critical is the collaboration and sharing of information at the community level. "We need increasingly sensitive members of the cyber community," he acknowledged.

In outlining Jamaica's progress in tackling cyber threats, the security minister said the government is enhancing reporting systems within the Jamaica Constabulary Force to allow citizens to report incidents swiftly and access timely assistance.

He was speaking Wednesday at the Ministry of National Security's CyberSmart Community Campaign event, held at the Glendevon Primary and Infant School in St. James.
