Grief ounsellors from the Ministry of Education will be dispatched to the Penwood High School following the fatal stabbing of a student on the school compound on Thursday. Robert Miller, chairman of the School Board, said a meeting will be held Friday morning with the students, following which there will be grievance sessions.
“…Representatives from the Ministry of Education, along with representatives from the school itself. I will be there as well to meet with the students, the staff; because I understand that after the incident we had to cancel class for the remaining portion of the day. We had an emergency staff meeting, and the staff, inclusive of the principal, were not taking the issue well, so we will be meeting with the students just to outline what transpired,” said Mr. Miller.
The police report that two Grade Ten students were playing in a classroom when an altercation developed. A knife was used to stab one of the boys. He later died at hospital. The alleged attacker was handed over to the police.
Meanwhile plans are being advanced to improve security at Penwood High and prevent further violent incidents. Mr. Miller said discussions are taking place with the school's administration.
“I’ve collaborated with Northern Caribbean University and they have volunteered to train our security guards free of cost through the HEART programme…we are moving swiftly to beef up our security guards and our security system,” he said.
