Twelve employees of CVM Television (CVMTV) are out of a job following a cost-cutting exercise at the broadcast media company.
Ronnie Sutherland, Vice-President Sales and Marketing, said the redundancies took effect on Friday and involve a mix of administrative and ancillary personnel.
He told RJR News that the redundancies form part of an ongoing exercise aimed at further improving the 18-year old company.
"I would rather not say it’s a cost cutting (measure) as it is a furtherance of our effort to build efficiency in the business. We are moving to bring closer alignment to all we do to what we want to achieve. The market is as such that we can’t get by with waste.
"With all the analysis and assessment that we’ve done, we’ve come to the view that we can effectively go forward with less of some of the things that we’re now expending resources on," said Mr. Sutherland.
He added that this may not mean that CVMTV is necessarily reducing the staff complement, as in going forward there could be additional hiring.
According to the CVM Vice-President, Friday's exercise involved lower level staff.
"The process here is a clear determination to build efficiency. This time (is) different from the most recently … these are much lower level redundancies."
In the meantime, the union representing the employees has demanded a withdrawal of the redundancy letters, noting that it was not alerted to the exercise.
Mr. Sutherland has maintained that the company honoured all its obligations under the Labour Relations Industrial Act.
