D-Day to file tax returns

Monday is the deadline for business operators to file their income tax returns with the Inland Revenue Department (IRD).

The deadline was extended this year as the customary March 15th deadline fell on the weekend.

Director of Public Relations at the Tax Administration Services Department Meris Haughton said it was expected that there would be a rush on the offices but said no additional extensions would be given after Monday's deadline.

"We are encouraging all business operators to file their returns. We have extended our opening hours by one hour to allow persons to file their returns, so we are encouraging persons to do so. If they're having any difficulties, we're asking that they contact one of our collectorates to make special arrangements," she said.

Mrs. Haughton said measures are in place for the expected rush on collectorates.

"For example, at the Cross Roads Collectorate, we have (erected) a tent with chairs on the outside to accommodate persons. At our Constant Spring branch, persons who are simply filing a nil return will be directed downstairs where they will forgo waiting in the busy banking hall to transact their business. We are also reminding persons that we will open an hour later today to accommodate persons filing these returns," said Miss Haughton.

Collectorates located at King Street , Cross Roads, Constant Spring, Mandeville, Savanna-La-Mar, Montego Bay, Morant Bay , Brown's Town, St. Ann 's Bay, Falmouth and Lucea will operate until 5 o'clock Monday evening.

All other offices will adhere to their regular schedules.
