Death toll associated with Hurricane Irma increased to 7

The death toll from Hurricane Irma, which has battered several islands in the eastern Caribbean, has increased to seven.

Officials have confirmed at least six deaths and considerable damage in the French territories of  St Martin and Saint Barthélemy. The other death occurred in Barbuda which is said to be barely habitable after being ravaged by Irma. With the scale of the damage still emerging, the death toll is likely to rise.

Irma howled past Puerto Rico yesterday and is now on a track which will take it to Florida. It is expected to pass near or just north of the coast of the Dominican Republic today and then head near the Turks and Caicos and southeastern Bahamas.

While Irma’s intensity could fluctuate, it is expected to remain at least a Category 4 before arriving in Florida.
