After making a second landfall as a Tropical Storm, Debby dumped heavy rain and spawned tornadoes across North and South Carolina on Thursday evening, leveling homes, damaging a school and flooding communities.
At least six deaths in the Southeast United States have been blamed on the storm.
The National Hurricane Center says the weather system, which has weakened to a Tropical Depression, is expected to persist, affecting portions the Mid-Atlantic states and Northeast through Saturday morning.
Since crashing into Florida as a Category 1 hurricane on Monday, Debby has dumped more than a foot of rain over parts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina.
The rains have engorged rivers, flooded roadways and trapped people in cars, homes and boats.
Recovery efforts could be hampered by potentially dangerous heat, expected across the region in the coming days.
