Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewelyn says she is not in support of the Press Association of Jamaica's call for a repeal of section 13 (1) of the Gun Court Act that bars members of the public, including the media, from observing some court proceedings.
The PAJ says the in-camera provision is inconsistent with the Constitution of Jamaica and is not demonstrably justifiable in a free and democratic society.
The Association's call was in response to the decision by the judge to bar members of the media and family members from observing the preliminary hearing for murder accused Jolyan Silvera last Thursday and a subsequent statement by the judiciary defending the position of the judge.
But speaking Ms Llewellyn, speaking Monday on Beyond the Headlines, said she doesn't believe there is a need to remove that section of the act.
She suggested however that members of the media should seek to use a subsection of section 13 to make the case for being allowed to observe Gun Court matters.
