DPP Paula Llewellyn, speaking Tuesday on Beyond the Headlines
Director of Public Prosecutions Paula Llewellyn has announced that her office will be taking over all matters before the courts in relation to environmental breaches being handled by the National Environment and Planning Agency [NEPA].
It follows an outcry about a confidential agreement last year between NEPA and Trade Winds Citrus Limited to end prosecution over an oil spill in the Rio Cobre.
Ms Llewellyn, speaking Tuesday on Radio Jamaica's Beyond the Headlines, said a senior prosecutor has been assigned to NEPA matters before the courts, and has "already appeared in two of the matters."
She added that the Office of the DPP will be working with NEPA to mentor the regulatory agency's legal team in respect of "prosecutorial best practices," and hold seminars for them "to make sure that we are all on the same page."
