Education Ministry explains placement of students who sat PEP

The Ministry of Education has provided an explanation for its placement of students who sat the inaugural Primary Exit Profie (PEP) examinations.

Following the release of PEP results last Friday, some parents contacted RJR News to express disappointment that although their children achieved proficiency in the exams, they were not placed in the schools of their choice.

Colin Steer, Director of Corporate Communication in the Ministry of Education, said the placement mechanism is based on the performance of the student and the choices of schools made by their parents.

Mr. Steer told RJR News that where a student is not placed in a school that is not one of the seven selected, this would be as a result of all the schools selected being full.

He said the student would then have been placed using the secondary placement list, otherwise called the proximity list - that is a school close to the primary school the student attended.

Mr. Steer added that all students across the island are vying for spaces in the same 35 traditional high schools that have spaces for close to 8,000 students.

Once those spaces have been taken, students have to be placed in other schools.
