Education Minister Fayval Williams

The Ministry of Education is sticking with the September 2 date for the commencement of the 2024-2025 school year, despite damage to more than 300 schools during the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
On Monday, the Jamaica Teachers' Association predicted a delayed start to some schools that suffered significant damage due to the hurricane.
But Education Minister Fayval Williams says contingent measures are in place for the resumption of classes.
With 352 of the 1,009 schools suffering some sort of damage, Minister Williams argued that the majority of institutions would have no challenge reopening on September 2.
Repairs are being undertaken at damaged schools, with the Education Ministry earlier this week reporting progress.
