Finance Ministry takes issue with JTA's push for increment payments in April

The Ministry of Finance and the Public Service has taken issue with the Jamaica Teachers' Association's position to push for the payout of retroactive increments in April.

In a memorandum on Wednesday addressed to its members, the JTA advised that the disbursement of increments would not be done in April.

The JTA had been advocating for the payments to begin this month, though the Minister of Finance had agreed to begin payments within the first quarter of the 2025-26 financial year.

This means the ministry has up to June to fulfil the negotiated terms.

The ministry on Thursday said it found it incredulous that the JTA informed its members of an April 25 payday.

The delay has sparked discontent among teachers who were expecting the increments which are issued based on tenure.

The ministry says it is shocking that the JTA would indicate to its membership a timeline that was not agreed, especially given the need for costing to be determined to inform payments.

The ministry says it remains committed to the payment of the increments negotiated by the Jamaica Confederation of Trade Unions on behalf of the JTA.

The retroactive payments come under the public sector compensation review exercise and apply to eligible public sector workers.
