The Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) has announced that it will be taking drastic action against some licensed firearm holders in a matter of days.
Shane Dalling, the newly appointed CEO of the FLA, has issued a deadline of July 1, for licensed holders who have not taken in their firearms for yearly inspection to do so, or face prosecution.
He's asserting that the number of persons who have not brought in their firearms for inspection or paid the yearly license fees is too high.
According to the FLA CEO, these persons are breaching the Firearms Act and the time to tighten up has come.
“Persons will have an opportunity between now and July 1 to come in and regularize themselves. Thereafter we will be enforcing this rule. We have to give account of the tuition and guns that we issue and this measure will ensure that we are being compliant and ensuring that our holders are held accountable for every firearm that is out there and the ammunition that they purchase. I am asking persons to use this period from now to July 1, to regularize themselves.”
According to Dalling,it is a criminal offense for persons not have their guns inspected yearly.
“In fact, the offence carries with it a penalty of J$200-thousand or 12 months imprisonment. The delinquent include police officers,” he said.
