First Phillips casualty - Rosemarie Shaw resigns

The fallout from Saturday's defeat of People's National Party (PNP) Presidential challenger Dr. Peter Phillips has begun with the resignation of Caretaker/candidate for Western St. Thomas, Rosemarie Shaw.

Ms. Shaw says basic incompatibility between herself and the newly re-elected leader is at the heart of her decision.

She says she had thought about it long and hard prior to Saturday and now believes that there is no hope of a comfortable relationship with the Party leader.

Ms Shaw says she saw Dr Phillips' bid for the Presidency as a glimmer of hope for the party, but has now decided to bow out of representational politics

According to Ms Shaw, what the delegates see in the party President, she does not, and that perhaps the time has come to step back and stay in the background as an ordinary party member.

The Caretaker/candidate says she took her cue from party officials who have confessed since Saturday that they stood down when it became clear they could not get along with the party leader at the time.

Ms Shaw added that she wants to give Mrs. Simpson Miller a free hand to do her work and she will relinquish her role as caretaker under the current dispensation, lest she be accused of being an obstacle.

She is contending that she will consider offering herself for greater service in the future, if and when she sees a party President she can work with.

Ms Shaw added that her only concern is that the party moves quickly to find a replacement to carry on its work in Western St. Thomas.

The 48-year old caretaker was a Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) Councillor in the 1990s and served as Mayor of Morant Bay.

She fell out with the JLP as part of the so called "Western 11" whose dissension with the then-Seaga led Opposition, led to the resignation of Bruce Golding as party chairman in 1995.

The group had called for Mr. Seaga's resignation.

Shortly thereafter, Ms. Shaw was booted as mayor in the aftermath of a no-confidence vote against her by JLP councillors.

A short while later, she switched sides and joined the PNP, where she became sitting Councillor for the Morant Bay Division and started her bid for Member of Parliament for Western St. Thomas.

She was defeated in the last general election by the JLP's James Robertson.

Meanwhile Dr. Phillips is scheduled to meet with Party President Portia Simpson Miller.

It is understood that the meeting is set for Monday afternoon and comes after a telephone conversation between the two on Sunday which aides described as cordial.

There is still no word from Dr. Phillips on what decisions he will take regarding his future within the PNP.
