Five children from Ocho Rios Primary School are still being treated at the St. Ann's Bay Regional Hospital after they consumed sweets laced with ganja on Monday.

The sweets were purchased from a vendor outside the school gate.

Sixty-five children were rushed to hospital suffering from major dehydration and hallucinations.

Chief Executive Officer at the St. Ann's Bay Regional Hospital, Delroy Morgan, said three girls and two boys, aged seven to 10 years, remain under observation.

"One is in and out of drowsiness and is admitted to the paediatric ward. The other four are under observation, continue on their treatment plan, and we will continue to give updates as necessary," he told Radio Jamaica News.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton has said the sweets entered the island illegally.

The National Council on Drug Abuse is to test the product to determine its ingredients.

Meanwhile, the Ganja Growers and Producers Association of Jamaica has called for the Cannabis Licensing Authority and the Ministry of Health to speedily implement regulations for edibles and packaging to prevent a recurrence of the incident at Ocho Rios Primary.

The Association and the Jamaica Licensed Cannabis Producers say they are not distributors of ganja edibles and no registered member was directly or indirectly associated with the incident.

The Ganja Growers and Producers Association of Jamaica is suggesting a partnership to develop and implement a public education programme on responsible cannabis use by adults and prevention of use by minors.
