A contingent of police and soldiers has been deployed to Christiana, Manchester after five people were shot and wounded on Tuesday night.
An off-duty firefighter is among the victims.
According to the police, about 11:30, people were milling about at Apple Tree Plaza at the intersection of Job Lane and Christiana main road following a Boxing Day event.
It's reported that two men, armed with handguns, drove up to the location on a motorcycle, stopped and began firing indiscriminately.
Five people were shot.
They are in stable condition at hospital.
People's National Party caretaker for North East Manchester, Valenton Wint, said to end the year with such violence does not bode well for the Christiana community.
"This certainly is not what we are accustomed to and we will not tolerate or accept this. So we are calling for stronger police presence, and as much as I know the police has been doing a great job, but this calls yet for another level. This act of savagery cannot cannot continue," he lamented.
Superintendent Shane McCalla, head of the Manchester Police, said no motive has been established for the "senseless" shooting, which he said took place after a yearly and very peaceful event.
He promised that the police will try to restore peace.
Superintendent McCalla urged people with information on Tuesday night's incident to contact the police.
Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for North East Manchester Audley Shaw, who was at the venue two hours before the shooting, said he is concerned about the increasing levels of crime and violence in his constituency.
"I'm going to have a sit-down with [National Security Minister] Dr. Chang about this because I think we need to have more resources in this constituency," he said.
