Four members of the Firearms & Narcotics Investigation Division, accused of soliciting money and using forged documents to secure the release of a Trelawny woman under investigation for drug trafficking, were offered bail on Thursday when they appeared before the Supreme Court.

The four were each offered bail in the sum of two million dollars following a bail application by their attorneys Christopher Townsend and Chadwick Berry.

The defendants were charged on Tuesday with facilitating the commission of a serious offence by a criminal organization, forgery, uttering forged documents, and perverting the course of justice.

They are Detective Sergeant James Dawes, Detective Corporal Tamela Anderson, Detective Constable Shane Givans, and Constable Lakarie Barrett.

The accused were charged under the Anti-Gang Act following a ruling by the Director of Public Prosecutions earlier this week.

But, during Thursday's bail hearing, Mr Townsend questioned why the cops were charged under the Anti-Gang Act. He argued that there is no evidence that the cops were involved in gang activities.

The accused are to return to court on May 21.

It's alleged that in 2023 the four officers were investigating the complainant for suspected drug trafficking when she was taken into custody and detained.

Shortly afterwards, the complainant's mother alleged she'd received a call from a policeman who stated that her daughter would be released if money was paid.

The complainant was later released without being charged.

A subsequent complaint was made to the Jamaica Constabulary Force's Inspectorate and Professional Standards Oversight Bureau, which launched an investigation.

It was reportedly discovered that the four accused had prepared the forged document used to release the woman from custody.
