Golding pledges PNP gov't will eliminate 'abusive' fixed-term contracts

 

Opposition Leader Mark Golding is again affirming that a People's National Party (PNP) administration will discontinue the current fixed-term contract arrangement in companies across the country. 

 

Speaking at a party meeting in Trelawny on Thursday, Mr. Golding again argued that workers are being denied health and pension benefits under the current arrangement.

 

"We are going to eliminate the abusive use of recurring contracts for our tourism workers and other workers. All workers who are permanently employed, in fact, must be treated as such in law, so they get their full range of benefits. The next PNP government will do that," he vowed.

 

The country's trade unions have been pressing the government over the last several years to review the fixed-term contract system as it is being used as a tool by employers to deny workers their benefits.

 

Meanwhile, Mr. Golding also pledged that a PNP administration will address the contentious issue of beach access "so that all our people can enjoy the beauty of this country, and if they want go hold a meds on a wonderful beach, they'll be able to do so because we will ensure access and we will be negotiating with owners so that those rights are protected and those rights are given full expression".
