Gordon “Butch” Stewart shelves plan to build US $100 m resort in Antigua

St. Lucia stands to benefit from a decision by Jamaican hotelier Gordon “Butch” Stewart not to proceed with a 100 million US dollar resort at Long Bay in Antigua.

Mr. Stewart who is the Chairman of  the Sandals and Beaches hotel chain brands, on Wednesday said he had decided to shelve plans for the development because of  political wrangling in Antigua.

He was referring to opposition to the project by the Antigua Labour Party, especially from the MP for the area Robin Yearwood.

Mr. Stewart said the money earmarked for the Antigua Beaches project has been reallocated.

A media report out of  St. Lucia said a senior Sandals source disclosed that the island is to be the main beneficiary of  this re-direction of  investment funds.
