Some Jamaicans who have never been issued with a birth certificate will be able to get the document free of cost as part of an initiative under the National Identification System (NIDS) project.
The government on Friday launched Operation Birthright, being funded at a cost of US$350,000 or J$50 million.
The project will target at least 11,000 Jamaicans and will be executed by the Registrar General's Department (RGD).
Eligible persons must have been born in Jamaica, must be aged one year or older and from a household with a monthly income of $37,000 or below.
Members of Parliament, representatives of religious and community groups, medical doctors, justices of the peace are among those who can provide referrals to the RGD under Operation Birthright.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said the initiative is part of the move towards creating a digital society.
Other initiatives towards the digital move include registration for the NIDS, which Mr. Holness said will begin in a "few month" as well as the establishment of its administrative body, the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA).
The Prime Minister added that Jamaica's digital currency has already been launched and legislation is being put in place for data protection and a data commissioner.
