Gov't says local contractors not being excluded from SPARK programme

By Prince Moore

The government has asserted that there is no intention to exclude local contractors from the SPARK programme.

This is in response to concerns from the Incorporated Masterbuilders Association of Jamaica (IMAJ) that most local contractors will be unable to meet the requirements to participate in the two-year road improvement initiative.

Minister without Portfolio in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation, Robert Morgan, convened a meeting on Tuesday with members of the IMAJ to address the issue.

In a subsequent media release, Mr. Morgan said members of the IMAJ outlined their proposals and concerns on how to improve the programme and increase local participation.

He said at the end of the discussion members of the IMAJ expressed satisfaction with the government's commitment to inclusivity.

Accordingly, he said the government and the IMAJ agreed to engage in consultations on the SPARK programme, going forward.
