Opposition Senator Lambert Brown says it is highly unlikely that the legislation to make Portmore the 15th parish will come into effect this year and warned that a People's National Party government will repeal the act.

He was speaking in the Senate on Friday during the debate on amendments to the Counties and Parishes Act.

Senator Brown argued that Portmore does not have the required infrastructure to become a parish, adding that the residents are strongly against the push by the government at this time.

He declared that the government's efforts will fail.

"With a quorum of eight in the Senate, five people can pass this law. But you know the good thing about it? Time come. An election will be called, and we will repeal this act. Next thing, as Senator [Peter] Bunting made clear, it doesn't look practical for this legislation to be implemented before the next election. So we rush today to pass it, but it will be of no moment," he declared.

The bill was later approved by the Senate.
